Instagram poll takes a teen's life

May 16, 2019

MDN WORLD (May 16,2019) - This could be another case of a dangerous suicidal challenge victimizing minors similar to that of the Momo Challenge.  A teenager from Malaysia took her own life after respondents on a poll she posted on Instagram voted. The girl was actually asking on a poll if she should live or die. The teenager's wrong and uncheck decision has prompted investigation from police investigators as this was, maybe, another case of a self-harm challenge. The 16-year-old teen's identification was still kept by police authorities while investigation is going on to protect her privacy, aside from the fact that she was a minor offender. MDN tried to undergo a thorough research if this is part of the 50 deadly self-harm challenge imposed by Momo to her would-be-willing innocent victims but failed.  The victim, who lives in Kuching in eastern part of Sarawak state posted on the Facebook-owned Instagram that she needed help to decide on her fate. "Really Important, Help Me Choose D/L," was the very short appeal she posted on Instagram prior to her untimely demise on May 13. Apparently, the victim referred "D" to death and L for Live. The poll, she posted, received 69 percent of the votes in favor of her to take her own life, while only 13 percent voted for her to live. A lawmaker known as Ramkarpal Singh has also called for thorough investigation into the circumstances of her death. "Would the girl still be alive today if the majority of netizens on her Instagram account discouraged her from taking her own life?," the lawyer asked. Syed Saddiq, youth and sports minister has also added to the growing demands of online users to give justice to the victim. "I urge the authorities... to investigate the social media accounts of the victim and the circumstances that led to her death to prevent further abuse of social media in similar circumstances in the future." Saddiq said this is a matter of national interest and it should be taken seriously by everyone. "It's a national issue which must be taken seriously. A national discussion must take place."

The Zubiri's tasted first defeat in Bukidnon

May 15, 2019

CAGAYAN DE ORO (MDN digital, May 15) Sometimes in politics, not all moneyed politicians will always prevail. This happened to veteran politician and incumbent mayor Ignacio "Iñaki" Zubiri in Malaybalay City, who tasted his first defeat to a neophyte but very promising politician, lawyer John Flores, for the 2nd congressional district in Bukidnon.  Despite of the fact that President Rodrigo Roa Duterte supported the candidacy of the incumbent city mayor but Duterte's charm did not help him The Zubiris' are known big time politicians in this landlocked province. And no one would ever believe defeat will happen to mayor Zubiri whose been serving the city for decades. Iñaki Zubiri was the nephew of the province's political kingpin Jose Ma Zubiri, the father of Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri.  Based on partial unofficial tally of the Commissions on Elections in Bukidnon for the second congressional district, Zubiri got only 34,814 votes while his opponent had 43,967. So the newcomer surpassed more than Nine Thousands votes. The Commission on Elections in its website revealed that the incumbent mayor only won in Cabanglasan town as of 10:00 am on Tuesday. He got a margin of around 2,000 votes in Cabanglasan but still not enough to cover his beating in other towns of the second district.      Meanwhile, Flores' elder brother also won in the mayoralty position in Malaybalay City against incumbent Vice Mayor Roland Deticio. Detecio was a successor of Zubiri where he supported in this midterm elections 2019. The elder Flores got a total of 43,061 while the incumbent Vice Mayor only had 34,178 votes. The defeated Zubiri, report said, began his political career in the city in 1998 as a City Councilor. He also became the city's vice mayor from 2004-2010. Duterte-supported bets sweep midterm polls

May 15, 2019

CAGAYAN DE ORO (MDN digital, May 15) - The 2019 midterm national and local elections showed the Dutertes are still in command as far as convincing the electorates whom to vote during elections. And this is a great manifestation of a future plan ahead in 2022. The early partial unofficial tally of the Commissions on Elections (Comelec) Manila showed the opposition candidates making its mark in the so-called Magic 12 but as the counting of the Board of Canvassers reach more than 70-80 percent, the opposition bets gradually lost their powers and eventually vanished in the Magic 12 that are now dominated by the Duterte-led political parties. On top of the Magic 12 was re-electionist senator Cynthia Villar who got a partial unofficial tally of 24,082,934 votes based on the Comission on Elections as of 4:40am on Tuesday, May 14. As of presstime there were already 92.61 percent of precincts have results transmitted.  Grace Po, who ran independent was interestingly at the second spot with 21,078,911 votes, while Bong Go climbed fast to the top 3 with 19,480,785 votes. Of the Magic 12, only Poe was not from the Dutertes' list as Poe ran independent. But all of the 11 other senatorial aspirants for this 2019 midterm polls were from the Dutertes' backed political parties - Hugpong ng Pagbabago, led by Mayor Sarah Duterte and PDP-Laban backed by President Duterte.  What is very surprising is the surge of three neophyte politicians to the top of the Magic 12 - Bong Go, Bato dela Rosa and Francis Tolentino, denying the entry of veteran politicians Bam Aquino, Mar Roxas and JV Ejercito to the top 12.  Other senators who made it to the Magic 12 include: Pia Cayetano Bato dela Rosa Sonny Angara Lito Lapid Imee Marcos Francis Tolentino Koko Pimentel Nancy Binay Bong Revilla Meanwhile, JV Ejercito is tailing Bong Revilla at the 13th spot. JV is still hoping that the favor will come to him as soon as all votes are already casted by the Comelec Manila. None of the Otso Deretso senatorial candidates of the opposition make it to the Magic 12. Bam Aquino and Mar Roxas who are expected to win as they are among the top contenders to the vacant senatorial slots, but the charms of the two Dutertes prevented them from shining and regaining post at the Magic 12. Although Bam Aquino made it to the Magic 12 at the early counting of votes by the PPCRV.
