URGELLO Street, Cebu City, Philippines – Southwestern University (SWU) PHINMA wins the top prize in the Mobile App Venture Challenge (MAVC) organized by post-graduate professor Chris Waller along with the Cebu IT-BPM Organization, Department of Trade and Industry-Cebu, Department of Information and Communication Technology, Department of Science and Technology, and the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development.
The SWU PHINMA’s Team Rapid won First Place in the leisure, gaming, and education category. They received a P150,000 cash prize and an all-expense paid trip to the Innovation Hub in Manila, facilitated by the Department of Science and Technology.
Team Rapid consisted of 4th year BS Information Technology students: Romeo Sison III, Chloe Labastilla, Marianne Alinsob and Kerwin Villarin. The group submitted their very own mobile-app called Tutoro in the leisure and education category. Tutoro is a tutoring service which provides convenience in communication between students and tutors. It provides users (both students and parents) the ability to select tutors suitable to their specific needs.
Over 70 teams coming from various schools joined the competition. Open to all IT college students, the challenge aims to develop the students’ ability to develop innovative applications and business models that could impact the local economy. There are several categories that students can join: financial technology, leisure and gaming products, and open class, an idea that involves around mobile technology for Android and iOS platforms.
Southwestern University PHINMA is part of PHINMA Education. Traditionally known for its outstanding medical and allied health programs, SWU PHINMA launched last year the SWU Next programs consisting of: Information Technology, Business Administration, Communication Arts, Hospitality Management, Veterinary Medicine, Architecture and Sports Science.
PHINMA Education is the education arm of Philippine conglomerate PHINMA Corporation. It currently operates a network of six (6) schools in the country including PHINMA Saint Jude College in Metro Manila acquired in December last year.
