SM malls once again conduct the Green Retail Agenda this July. SM City General Santos mounted their forum last July 9 while SM City Cagayan de Oro and SM City Davao held theirs last July 14 and 16, respectively.
This year’s theme “Building Corporate Resiliency: Risk Reduction Program” is aimed at opening an arena for discussions on how businesses can manage risk brought about by disasters and climate change. In SM City General Santos, City Councilor Elizabeth Bagonoc discussed Climate Change Adaptation while Office of Civil Defense Assistant Regional Director Jerome B. Barranco talked about Utilizing Current Technology for Disaster Risk Reduction Management.
Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office Chief Emmanuel M. Jaldon’s talk at SM City Davao focused on the city’s vulnerability to disasters. He further elaborated on the facilities and programs that the city has put in place in order to manage risks. Award-winning social entrepreneur and founder of Switotwins Arch. Gloryrose Dy shared how architectural designs can be utilized to mitigate
effects of risks. SM Davao CRS manager Harvey Bansuelo on the other hand discussed the mall’s practices and programs for risk reduction.
Meanwhile, Xavier University Engineering Resource Center Founding Director Dexter Lo showed a power point presentation as well as discussed ‘Why disasters happen?’ to an audience at the SM City Cagayan de Oro Atrium.
For several years, SM has been very active in disaster risk reduction management. In 2012, SM Prime Holdings Inc. president Mr. Hans T. Sy was invited during the Top Leaders Forum to the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction – Private Sector Advisory Group by Margareta Whalstrom, Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Disaster Risk Reduction. DRRM has been a personal advocacy of Mr. Hans.
In addition to this, several SM Malls are built to be disaster resilient. The SM Mall of Asia Complex features innovative designs on its seawall and reclamation methodology. Also, the buildings are built above the national building code. SM City Marikina is built on stilts which allows the free-flow of water on its 2 basement parking levels when the water rises in the Marikina River. SM City BF Paranaque and SM City Masinag are built with a holding tanks with enough capacity to reduce the effects of flooding during the typhoon seasons. Also, SM City Muntinlupa is built with a two-way slab system to minimize the effects of earthquakes exceeding a magnitude of 8.0
SM Lanang Premier will be holding the Green Retail Agenda on July 31.
