A DEEPER VIEW

Noting with great interest reactions from people in Mindanao about the call made by people not residing in the island for the lifting of Martial Law as an aftermath of the arrest last week of an incumbent and former Makabayan bloc House members that included four pastors from two mainstream protestant churches.
Mindanaoanons, at least those that we have read in social media, label as misplaced the cry of non-Mindanaoanons asking for the lifting of Martial Law in the entire island because they are not from Mindanao. Mindanaoanons, they say, welcome Martial Law in Mindanao for it has brought peace and prosperity in the island.
Of course, non-Mindanaoanons cannot question this. But what is forgotten in the social media discourse that we have followed is the fact that Mindanao is still part of the Philippines. As part of the entire body politic what is happening in Mindanao still have bearing on the entire country.
A fractured toe will surely cause so much discomfort to the entire body even if it is the smallest toe. Same thing with Martial Law in Mindanao. It does not mean that rape is no longer rape simply because the victim felt a tinge of enjoyment during the rape. Rape is rape even if the victim enjoys the rape.
A battered wife is still a battered wife even if she chooses to remain under the same roof with the abusive husband. Her decision will never change the fact that she is a battered wife.
What we have observed in the social media discourse as very disturbing is the fact that Martial Law supporters who are also diehard political supporters of President Duterte do not see any more what’s wrong with Martial Law itself. This is saddening because it is just like rape that is no longer viewed as rape because the victim is not crying or shouting that it is rape.
Martial Law is a Constitutional tool to quell rebellion among others. Former Rep. Satur Ocampo is a confessed Leftist. Under Martial Law’s prism embracing, much more, professing the Leftist thought is a form of rebellion thus reducing those in the Left as rebels. As such, they are the reason why Martial Law was imposed therefore can be arrested anytime anywhere in Mindanao.
What’s the problem here? Whether we like it or not or welcome it or not, there will always be two spectrums in society be it in the economic, political or socio-cultural realms. There will always be the Right and Left spectrums. And in between is the Center. The Right works for the embrace and retention of the status quo if not make it more conservative.
Those on the Left side of the spectrum cries for the dismantling of the status quo represented by the Center by having it changed with another form that espouses a different ideology. Since humans are created to progress, they are viewed as always in the process of changing the status quo to make it better than it was before hence the concept that the Leftists are progressives.
Rebellion to change the status quo from being conservative to being progressive is what the Left stands for thus it is not wrong or evil to embrace Leftist thoughts. It is the status quo that makes progress something that should be dreaded by society which is contrary to humanity’s nature as creatures meant to progress.
Was Duterte arrested when he was literally waltzing with the Leftists while he was mayor of Davao City? If he was friendly to the Leftists while mayor, why has the Leftists become his enemies now that he is president? If you are not baffled by this, what will baffle you then?
