9 NPA rebels yield with 16 firearms Surigao del Norte

BY CRIS DIAZ

CAMP EVANGELISTA, Cagayan de Oro City – Nine members of the communist New People’s Army (NPA) with 16 firearms surrendered to the army’s 30IB in Mahanub, Gigaquit, Surigao del Norte, the military said Tuesday.

Maj. Francisco P. Garello, Jr., of the army’s public affairs office here, said that the rebels surrendered Sunday, August 21, 2022 but the report was released here on Tuesday, Aig. 23, 2022.

Garello identified the surrenderers as Edelberto Maisog, Grace Jubasan Bacalan, Jessie Siton Roxas, Chris Gire Libres, Nikki Bago Pinao, Alvin Palen, Janiza Galupo and another couple whose names are still being validated.

Most of the firearms seized were retrieved from an arms cache as revealed by some of the surrenderers, Garello said.

In a statement, MGen Wilbur C Mamawag, the 4ID Commander, said that the surrender of the nine NPA rebels would lead to the eventual collapse of the remnants of the communist rebels operating in Surigao del Norte.

Mamawag said the surrender of the communist rebels in various areas in Northern Mindanao was attributed to the collaborative efforts of the military and various stakeholders in extending the hands of peace to “our misguided brothers.” -O-
