THE provincial government of Misamis Oriental spent a total of P74 million last year to disburse the Special Education Fund allocated to them intended to improve school facilities in the province as mandated in the Local Government Code.
In a press conference Wednesday (March 5), provincial Local School Board secretary Jerome Mundo reported that the expenses were divided into construction of classrooms at the kindergarten, elementary and secondary levels as well as school facilities such as laboratories, covered courts and provision of school equipment such as technical and scientific equipment, armchairs, garden tools, vehicle, etc. and renovation of school facilities such as gates, fences, stairways and day are centers.
Mundo said that the Special Education Fund allocated to the provincial government of Misamis Oriental was also used in 2018 for maintenance and operating expenses and assistance for athletes for Palarong Pambansa, division and national meet as well as for the physical fitness program of the students division-wide. (The Misamis Oriental provincial schools division encompasses all public schools in the whole province.)
Funds were likewise earmarked for the reading enhancement program for students.
Mundo said construction of classroom buildings in 2018 cost a total of P15 million, including facilities for an IP school called Alegodan Elementary School, a kindergarten classroom building and a laboratories for a public secondary school.
Construction of school covered courts also amounted to P18 million during the twelve-month period from January to December 2018.
Assistance for athlete meanwhile, totaled P3.9 million.
Mundo explained that the Special Education Fund is culled from one percent of the real property tax that the local government unit (LGU) has collected in a given period.
It is set aside exclusively for operation and maintenance of public schools, construction and repair of schoolbuildings, facilities and equipment, educational research, purchase of books and periodicals and sports development.
