Sonny Melencio, chair of the Partido Lakas ng Masa emphasized that Charter Change, with the legislature transforming itself into a Constituent Assembly is the “worst mode to amend the constitution”.
He stressed, “The highest law of the land would be bungled by the Con-Ass not only because it is headed by a misogynist buffoon in the persona of speaker Alvarez but also because it is a mere rubber stamp of the aspirant fascist in Malacanang. It does not constitute the will of the people but of traditional politicians whose expertise is to squeeze out every centavo of the public coffers to maintain and prolong their power in their respective districts”.
“A truly democratic charter is one that is drafted by debates and discussions at the grassroots levels – in factories, plantations, offices, and schools – by genuine representatives of the workers and the poor. With this in mind, the PLM – along with groups that have coalesced in the Laban ng Masa – will organize people’s assemblies in the months to come to unite around a platform of genuine change, forming the “People’s Charter” of meaningful and sweeping reforms to address the issues and concerns of the Filipino majority,” Melencio explained.
