CAGAYAN de Oro City--Public school students from both the elementary and secondary levels in Northern Mindanao will experience a different Christmas celebration in their respective campuses this year.
Department of Education (DepEd) 10 director Allan Farnazo issued a memorandum last week ordering all school divisions in the region to disseminate to the public schools for what he calls an “alternative Christmas celebration.”
Pressed for elaboration, Farnazo said he is highly encouraging the students, their parents and the teachers that instead of exchanging gifts with each other which is common in classrooms during the season, the pupils must forward the gifts they have bought to the children displaced in the recent Marawi crisis.
To motivate the students, Farnazo included in his memorandum a Search for the Best Alternative Christmas celebration, the judging of which will happen on January 9 next year.
As of this moment, it wasn’t clear yet on what incentives the winning entrant-school receives but Farnazo stated in his memo that “all expenses relative to this celebration are charged against local funds subject to the usual accounting and auditing rules and regulations.”
At the height of the five-month-long Marawi crisis, schoolchildren here have already donated 3,000 gift boxes to soldiers and displaced children alike containing assorted toiletries, canned goods, bottled water and letters of encouragement.
Farnazo said a similar undertaking will be initiated but on a smaller classroom scale.
