CAUAYAN CITY, Isabela -- The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region-2 office held its first regional Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) Forum at the Marco Paulo Hotel here last April 3, which has added a touch of science and technology to this city’s recently concluded Gawaygaway-yan Festival.
A total of 108 representatives from different schools, universities and colleges (SUCs); micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and institutions participated in the forum, which gave them insights into the history and achievements of SETUP in the region in recent years.
DOST Secretary Fortunato T. de la Pena, who keynoted the forum said the event also highlighted the achievements of SETUP in the Cagayan region, and the success of its MSMEs and individual clients.
"Gawaygaway-yan Festival is a celebration of successful SETUP clients and creating new opportunities for MSMEs," de la Pena noted, adding that SETUP seeks to pursue DOST’s major objective to make science and technology truly relevant in the country’s industry sector.
“History will speak for itself” the Secretary stressed, referring to SETUP’s excellent results that reflect the various DOST interventions in enterprises.
In his opening remarks, DOST Regional Director Engr. Sancho A. Mabborang said their regional office takes pride in its achievement as the DOST region with the highest number of SETUP clients and beneficiaries, recorded at 458.
Mabborang said DOST R-2 has registered the highest SETUP beneficiaries nationwide at 458 which have been extended innovative assistance worth about P398M, and which produced job employment of around 21,000 and generated about P4B in sales since 2002.
During the forum, enterprise expert Coach Randy Esguerra made an engrossing discussion on the fundamentals of enterprise development where he interestingly combined his knowledge, experiences and insights into the business world.
Aside from Cauayan City Mayor Bernard Faustino M. Dy and Isabela State University president Ricmar P. Aquino, the Filipino Inventors Society (FIS), led by its president Francisco "Popoy" O. Pagayon, and the Publishers Association of the Philippines, Inc. (PAPI) also contributed meaningful support to the forum and the festival.
Pagayon facilitated the participation of FIS member-investors who showcased their creative inventions during the two-week science and technology exhibits and programs of the Gawaygaway-yan Festival, from April 2 to 12, 2018, while PAPI mobilized its Cagayan members and campus journalists, as well as the Manila and Central Luzon media to participate in the forum and cover the events .
