Balingasag, Misamis Oriental – Economic opportunities are seen to bud in Barangay Baliwagan and other of its adjoining localities after the soft opening and operation of the Php21-million worth Municipal Food Terminal (MFT) on February 10, 2018, of this town.
The Project is a response of the government to further its market development initiatives by providing farmer and fisherfolks, locals, and neighboring towns with greater access to quality and reasonably priced agri-fishery products and other prime commodities.
Lying at an 8,000-square meter barangay property situated near the junction of the national road en route Butuan City and the provincial road bound for Malagana, Claveria, Misamis Oriental, the MFT was realized through the fund support of the Department of Agriculture – Regional Field Office 10 (DA-10) and the Local Government Unit of Balingasag, Misamis Oriental.
The soft opening of the Balingasag MFT signals for economic opportunities to flourish within the area and its adjacent municipalities, as both farmer and fisherfolks are provided with a venue to directly sell their agri-fishery products and other prime commodities at reasonable prices, resulting from the reduction of trading layers.
The total project cost was released in three tranches: Php10-M for the construction of the Bagsakan Complex; Php5-M for the completion of the Bagsakan Center and 400-meter circumferential road; and Php6-M for the provision of cold storage facilities, refrigerated truck van, elf truck, 2 units freezer, 2 units chiller, 2 units heavy duty weighing scale, 4 units digital weighing scale, 300 units plastic crates, and operating capital.
On behalf of the beneficiaries, Balingasag Mayor Marrietta Roa Abogado lauded the agency for being its partner in addressing the market needs of producers and buyers alike through the realization of the food terminal.
Likewise, the mayor urged the full cooperation of her constituents and challenged them, at the same time, to reap and sustain the gains in running the Project.
“Since many investors are coming over, dili puwede nga atong katawhan mabenta-an,” the local chief executive remarked.
DA-10 Assistant Regional Director Engr. Roxana H. Hojas also commended all those who have been instrumental for the establishment of the MFT, adding her optimism that farmer and fisherfolks can now focus more on their production to meet the demands of the market.
“Ang trabaho nalang sa atong mga farmers kay kung unsaon pag-increase sa ilaang produksiyon tungod kay sigurado ng nay buyer, nay masapi,” the director said.
Further, she encouraged all in attendance in relaying to more people the purpose of having the MFT to make the municipality of Balingasag more progressive.
“Spread the news kung unsay intensyon sa MFT…let us support the Project kay ato ni,” Hojas concluded.
Also gracing the ceremony are AMAD Chief Chedy V. Ansale and other DA-10 staff; Balingasag Vice-Mayor Alexis S. Quina, Municipal Agriculturist Emma B. Mofar and other local officials, farmer and fisherfolk-beneficiaries, and staff from the Provincial Agriculture’s Office of Misamis Oriental.
