MANILA — Most Filipinos hear 90.7 Love Radio DJ Nicole Hyala every morning. Do you know she’s also an entrepreneur?
Nicole Hyala (or Emmy Gaite Tiñana) is on her third year as franchisee of Peanut World. She told the Philippines News Agency (PNA) she learned about Peanut World through attending a franchise and business expo.
She was present during the opening day of the 14th Franchise and Business Expo: Empowering Entrepreneurs, which is slated from Oct. 2-4 at the World Trade Center in Pasay City.
Around 300 exhibitors have joined this event organized by the Association of Filipino Franchisers Inc. (AFFI).
As an entrepreneur, Nicole Hyala said the challenge is on manpower. “The problem really is maintaining the right people, those who will be honest,” she said.
The ‘Tambalan’ co-host also cited lean season as another challenge.
Nicole Hyala’s advice for fellow entrepreneurs is to keep their feet on the ground, and to love what they do.
Jelyn Chung, manager of Acqua Suisse Perfume Bar, meanwhile, cited exposure as main benefit from joining a business expo. She shared it’s her fourth or fifth time to join the AFFI’s franchise and business expo this year.
Acqua Suisse Perfume is available in the market since 2007.
Jelyn’s brother, John, thought of something that should be very unique and eye-catching. Their perfume is the only brand in the Philippines that we would see colorfully placed in wine bottles.
The scent/oil, according to Chung, comes from Switzerland and they manufacture it locally. The company offers refills and Acqua Suisse Perfume can be franchised in cart or kiosk form.
To be competitive in the perfume industry, Chung emphasized the importance of innovation. “You have to be innovative with the look, packaging as well as the overall look of the kiosk,” she told PNA, and added that the scent has to be trendy, too.
The packaging they offer is a pillow box, which is suitable for gift-giving.
At present, Chung’s product offers 24 scents (12 for men, 12 for women). Among the best sellers for women include Blue Sky, Always and Sun Down, while Army, Power, Quest and Refreshing are their best sellers for men.
She said their family business actually started as supplier of scents to manufacturers. Then they offered head-to-toe beauty products, until her brother thought of having their own perfume line.
Chung cited they plan to expand branches and go global, particularly in Vietnam and China.
Currently, Acqua Suisse Perfume has 56 branches (including franchisees and company-owned).
Like Nicole Hyala, Chung also cited finding trustworthy staff a major challenge in running a business. “Since we offer refills, there are those who might be adding an ml or two, and those who do not report (the refill),” she explained. She added that sometimes, the malls’ locations and traffic are also a challenge. Acqua Suisse Perfume is available in malls.
Meanwhile, the 14th Franchise and Business Expo aims to advocate responsible franchising and promote homegrown businesses. Apart from providing the entrepreneurs an avenue to showcase their business concepts, the expo also showcases several seminars/forums where the public could learn from seasoned entrepreneurs. (PNA)
