THE proposed ordinance declaring the 25th day of June of every year as Arbor Day in the City of Cagayan de Oro will undergo refinement.
During the regular session Monday presided over by Vice Mayor Raineir Joaquin V. Uy, it was noted that there should be an appropriation for the declaration to ensure its successful implementation.
Councilor Edna M. Dahino, author of the ordinance, said she is also amenable to change Arbor Day to Tree Planting Day, as suggested by Councilor Ian Mark Q. Nacaya.
Dahino said the date can also be changed to July 4, or another day.
The same ordinance also authorizes City Mayor Oscar S. Moreno to proclaim Arbor Day or Tree Planting Day as a public working holiday to ensure the participation of the different sectors of society.
As provided in the ordinance, all able-bodied residents of the city, who are at least 12 years old, shall be required to plant one tree every year.
To ensure its successful implementation, an Arbor Day Committee shall be created composed of representatives from various government agencies, civic organizations engaged in environmental protection and media associations in the city.
Councilor Zaldy O. Ocon, chair of the committee on environment and natural resources, pushed for the approval of the resolution, citing that this is provided for in Section 3 of Republic Act No. 10176. (SP/JAO)
