DAVAO CITY- The City Government of Davao held its ASEAN Landmark Lighting Tuesday evening at the frontage of the City Hall. The event was held to celebrate the 50th founding anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN.
Davao City and the Municipality of San Isidro in Davao Oriental were the two LGUs in Region XI that took part in the ceremony, which was joined by 74 other LGUs across the country.
The highlight of the ceremony is the symbolic simultaneous switching of the ASEAN lantern. In Davao City, Mayor Sara Duterte Carpio, Indonesian Consul-General Berlian Napitupulu and the Consulate of Malaysia representative Saiful Nizam Wahid.
In her speech Mayor Duterte compared the commemoration of ASEAN and the city’s forthcoming Kadayawan celebration as a showcase of diversity.
“The Asean is a symbol of the unity among ten equally diverse, colorful, multi-faceted, multi-cultural nations just as our Kadayawan festival is a symbol of the unity among all the peoples of Davao City, a microcosm of the greater Asean community to which we all belong.” the Mayor said in her speech.
Indonesian Consul General Berlian Napitupulu said that despite not understanding the language of the cultural presentations during the lighting, he could see the commonality of the cultures between ASEAN countries.
“Even though I don’t know their language, I don’t know what they are singing but I could see the similarities between us.” Napitupulu said.
Different schools in Davao City contributed contingents, which performed cultural song and dance presentations prior to the lighting. A light show was held to cap the event. PIA
