UNITED Kingdom-based companies remain interested in doing business in Mindanao, British Chamber of Commerce Philippines (BCCP) Chairman Chris Nelson said.
Nelson mentioned that two British firms are setting up their new offices in the southern Philippines, particularly in Davao.
These two companies joined a business mission in Davao in March.
“SeaGard has signed up for business, while YLF — an engineering consultancy firm — already established its office in Davao,” Nelson said.
SeaGard offers monitoring and protection service for marine asset.
On the other hand, YFL Contract and Costs Solutions has presence in Manila and recently put up its newest office in Davao.
The BCCP chair noted that from April to May there were seven UK companies that made inquiries and were interested to invest in the country.
These companies are in sectors of body cosmetics, water waste treatment, water technology, software, and automotive vehicle lubricants.
When asked if British firms remain keen on investing in Mindanao despite the declaration of martial law and the ongoing clash in Marawi City, Nelson responded “the answer to that is yes”.
“There has been no specific response,” he answered when asked about the perception of British companies’ on marital law declaration.
I would say rather, they are basically looking business at long term. Of course they will be guided by issues on security. But when you look at it, business is a long-term prospect. And I think what people are looking at is, what is my long term business prospect in the Philippines? What do I need to do? In any country, there will be a short term issues. Therefore, I think is, companies are looking at developments in the long term,” the BCCP chief stressed.
He added that the BCCP remains supportive with the 10-point socioeconomic agenda of President Rodrigo Duterte, and the Chamber is active in promoting the government’s economic agenda to British businesses.
