TACURONG CITY - Police and military authorities prevented what could have been a bloody National Heroes Day here after it found and safely deactivated a power improvised explosive device inside a passenger bus, an Army official said.
The powerful bomb fashioned from two 60 mm mortars as main charge and mobile phone as trigger mechanism was found at 10:50 a.m. inside Yellow Bus Line unit with body number 9208 at a police checkpoint in Barangay Dos along the Tacurong-Isulan highway.
The bus was heading toward Isulan, Sultan Kudarat from Tacurong City when subjected to inspection by police after Army and policemen received a report about the suspected bomb inside the bus.
Felilciano said during police inspection, a suspicious bag was found. After confirming it was an explosive with the help of K-9 dog, the Army’s 33rd Explosive and Ordnance Disposal Team brought the IED outside the bus and was disrupted.
No one has claimed responsibility.
But Feliciano said it could be the handiwork of extortion groups or armed men responsible in series of bombings in Central Mindanao region which the military hunted down in Maguindanao last month.
He was referring to the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) which has the expertise in bomb making.
On April 2, the Cotabato City police office foiled an attempt by unidentified men to carry out bombing in the city after it recovered an improvised bomb and a grenade in front of Cotabato Regional and Medical Center and Al-Nor Convention Center along Sinsuat Avenue.
Government forces in Central Mindanao have been on alert since February as the Army launched manhunt against BIFF.
Checkpoints were put up to foil bombing attempts or atrocities to be carried by the BIFF. (PNA)
