ROSARIO, Agusan del Sur--- The village chair of the Poblacion here who was also former vice mayor of this town was gunned down Friday night outside the terrace of his house by a motorcycle-riding lone gunman.
The victim, Julie Chua, who expired while he was rushed to the San Francisco Doctors Hospital was the second village chair who was slain by still unknown assassins that triggered rising political violence in this gold-rich mining town.
Senior Inspector Gary Boniao, Rosario police chief, said Chua was shot 10 times by the suspect wearing white baseball cap while he was relaxing sitting on his shiny ironwood sofa in their terrace.
The other village chair,Teotimo Carampatana Saday of the neighboring Cabantao village was killed by gunmen barely a month earlier while he was disembarking from his SUV in front of his house.
Residents were concerned about the spate of killings and shooting incidents around the town in between the killings of the two village chairs who belong to rival political camps.
Chua was expected to seek his old post as vice mayor in the local elections next year, a ;position he held in the past for two terms while Saday is also said to be running for office in the local polls. Chua belongs to the opposition camp while Saday supports the local administration party.
The local police is still facing the blank wall on the killing incidents even as it already killed a certain “Berdugo” in the manhunt operation who was said to be responsible in the shooting spree including the house of Mayor Jose Cuyos.
Next year’s local polls is expected to be hotly-contested between rich politicians engaged in gold tunnel mining in “high grade”gold rush areas.
