CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY: About 80 elected candidates of the Sangguniang Kabataang Barangay (SK) in Northern Mindanao face disqualification for various election offenses, the Commissions on Elections (COMELEC) said Thursday.
Some of the disqualified SK candidates have not reached the 18-year-old requirement on the day of election, while most elected SK who were disqualified were already more than 24-year-0ld on election day.
City Comelec Officer Ramil Acol, of Cagayan De Oro City, said that 14 elected SK candidates have been found disqualified based on the area requirements.
The guidelines for as SK candidate clearly stated that the qualified SK candidate must be “at least 18 years, but not more than 24 years of age on the day of the elections,” Acol said.
He said that when the candidates filed their certificate of candidacy, the COMELEC has specifically informed and reminded them about the guidelines.
Acol said that “the candidates simply proceeded with the filing of their COCs come what may on the day of the election.”
According to Acol, the City Comelec initially found out that more than 20 elected SK candidates might be disqualified to sit as elected SK members.
“We were only able to confirm the disqualification of the 14 SK elected candidates in Cagayan De Oro City at the moment,” Acol said.
He said that the disqualification proceedings were not in the COMELEC First Division in Manila for final review and decision.
