BUTUAN City--Three New Peoples Army rebels were killed in an encounter with government troopers in the interior sub village of Patagon in Anticala , Butuan City on Monday afternoon, military reports said.
In related incident, police recovered the dead body of a village councilman of the remote village of Valentina in Esperanza town in Agusan del Sur who was buried in a shallow grave in a neighboring village of Mantuganoy in San Luis town believed to be perpetrated by NPA guerillas.
Maj. Ronald Putol, civil military operation officer of the Army’s 402nd Brigade, said the rebels were killed after a 15-minute firefight.

Responding soldiers from the 29th Infantry Battalion engaged the rebels belonging to Guerilla Front 21 in the fierce gun battle after they received reports from civilians about the presence of NPAs in their community.
Putol said the casualties may have caused the rebels to flee leaving behind an AK 47 rifle. Two M16 Armalites , an M203 Grenade qnd ammunitions.
Lt. Col. Warren Munda, commanding officer of the 29th IB, said they are now coordinating local government officials to ensure that the cadaver of the slain rebels will be brought home to their families to let them have a decent burial.
“The dead bodies are yet to be identified and will be turned-over to the barangay officials in Anticala and PNP personnel for identification and proper disposition,” Putol said.
In the other report, police retrieved the dead body of councilman Rando Perez Insayoy in the neighboring community buried in a shallow grave with his hands hogtied. The victim bore several stab wounds.
He was earlier abducted by the alleged NPA rebels on January 25 in retaliation for his reported involvement in convincing his nephew to lay down his arms and return to the folds of law.
